The Different Types Of Golf Clubs And Their Uses

Golf clubs can be of different types, shapes, and sizes, and are used for putting, taking swings, and getting the best level of performance. Choosing the right club for the right shot is very important, and crucial to being your best on the greens. The beginner golfer needs to get an idea about the different types of clubs before they can even step onto a course or driving range. It is important to know which clubs are suitable for what distance and trajectory. Take a look at the information given below to get an idea about golf clubs and their uses.

Golf Club Types You Should Know About

Golf Driver

The golf driver is a golf club that is the most commonly known by golf enthusiasts. It is utilized to take long golf shots and requires a tee.

Golf Woods

Golf woods are another type of club that can be used to hit from the tee, or they can be used as replacements for long irons. They are considered to be the clubs that come somewhere in between golf irons and golf drivers.

Golf Irons

Golf irons are golf clubs that can be utilized for hitting golf balls to distances of up to 182m. Irons usually come in variations of sets, with each set having nine separate golf club sizes. The sizes are represented as clubhead numbers. Irons include:

  • Irons 1-3: Irons 1 to 3 are long irons that are necessary for longer distances. These have small lofts of around 20 degrees
  • Irons 4-6: These are the mid-range irons for reaching the average distance
  • Irons 7-9: These are short irons for hitting shots at short distances

Wedges

Wedges are golf clubs that are primarily used for driving a ball into putting greens. You should also use wedges for rescuing the ball out from tall grass areas and bunkers.

Golf Wedge Types

  • Gap Wedge: A gap wedge is mostly required for short distances and for driving a ball onto the putting green. These come with lofts in the 50-55 degrees range.
  • Sand Wedge: A sand wedge is a golf club type designed to hit balls out from sand bunkers and areas with tall grasses. These come with lofts in the 54-58 degrees range.
  • Lob Wedge: Lob wedges help golfers achieve greater heights over short distances. These come with a loft range of 60-64 degrees.
  • Pitching Wedge: Pitching wedges are well-suited for hitting balls that are at a considerable distance from the putting green, but not far enough to warrant the use of an iron.

Golf Putters

Golf putters are clubs that are used for putting balls on the putting green, with the objective of putting them into the hole. Choosing the right putter is very important.

Golf Hybrids

Hybrid clubs are fundamentally combinations of iron and wood golf clubs, and they are gaining fast popularity in the industry. These are considered to be suitable replacements for long irons in some cases, due to the difference in center of gravity.
